It is located in the northeastern United States on Massachusetts Bay, an arm of the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1630, its original name was Shawmut given to it by local Native Americans. The name was changed to Boston, after Boston, Lincolnshire, England. Boston has a rich history; The Boston Massacre, Tea Party and Battle of Bunker Hill all make for an interesting and intriguing read. The population of Boston is just under 668,000 with the population of the Greater Boston area registering in at 4.7 million residents. The combined statistical area comprises of Boston, Worcester and Providence, encompassing the states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. Boston is home to the oldest public park in the United States; Boston Common.
