History
Originally the Hawaiian Islands were explored by the Polynesians. They arrived between 800 & 1000 C.E. The Tahitians arrived around 1200 C.E. Captain James Cook discovered the islands in 1778 and named them the “Sandwich Islands” after the 4th Earl of Sandwich. The Islands were annexed by the U.S.A. in 1898. The state of Hawaii does not belong to a continent as it is located in the middle of the North Pacific Ocean. Hawaii’s capital is Honolulu and is located on the south shore on the Island of Oahu and is part of the Hawaiian Islands. The main Hawaiian Islands from smallest to largest are Kahoolawe, Niihau, Lanai, Molokai, Kauai, Oahu, Maui and Hawaii. The state of Hawaii recognizes 137 islands in total. The Hawaiian Islands were created by volcanic activity. Kure Atoll is the oldest Hawaiian Island. The Big Island of Hawaii being the youngest. Hawaii became a territory in 1900 and a state in 1959 making it the 50th state of the U.S.A. Honolulu is located on the Island of Oahu and has been Hawaii’s capital since 1845. The population of Honolulu is just over 100,000. Honolulu means calm port or sheltered harbor. Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese on December 7th, 1941 prompting the U.S.A. to finally join in the fight of WW2. Canned pineapples and refined sugar are the leading exports in Hawaii as a result of their large manufacturing industry, specifically food processing. Clothing, clay, glass, metals and shipbuilding are also major industries. Tourism is huge. Traditional fare widely enjoyed by tourists includes chicken long rice, laulau, poi, squid luau, lomi lomi, and kalua pork.
