History
Memphis is located in the Southwest part of the United States on the Mississippi River in the State of Tennessee. Original indigenous peoples included Cherokee, Yuchi, Koasati, Shawnee, Chickasaw and Quapaw. It was discovered by Spanish explorer and conquistador, Hernando De Soto during his expedition of 1539. The Chickasaw Indians relinquished the area to the U.S. in 1818. Memphis was established in 1819 by Andrew Jackson, John Overton and James Winchester then incorporated in 1826. Memphis was named after an ancient city in Egypt. The population of Memphis is just under 680,000. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis on April 4th, 1968. Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Aretha Franklin all had influence to the music scene. Although Elvis was born in Tupelo, Mississippi on January 8th, 1935 he and his parents moved to Memphis in 1948. In 1957, at the age of 22, Elvis bought Graceland. The purchase price was just over $100,000. You can visit and tour Graceland. His favorite sandwich was fried peanut butter and banana. He also enjoyed a loaf of Italian bread filled with 1 pound of bacon, grape jelly and peanut butter famously known as Fool’s Gold Loaf.Elvis Presley died of a heart attack on Aug. 16th, 1977, he was 42.Famous people from Memphis; Justin Timberlake, Elvis Presley, Fred Thompson, Michael Oher, Ginnifer Goodwin, Morgan Freeman, Kathy Bates, Shannen Doherty, George Hamilton and Cybill Shepherd.
