History
Chitimacha inhabited the land prior to the French Mississippi Co. settling the land and naming it La Nouvelle-Orléans (New Orleans) under the oversight and direction of Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville. U.S. bought the territory from the French in 1803, known as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The United States of America has owned the land since 1862 to the present day. New Orleans is the largest city in Louisiana. It is located in the southeastern part of Louisiana. The city and Orleans Parish (French: paroisse d’Orléans) cover the same area. It is a very diverse city, both in populace and cuisine. French, Spanish, Creoles, Americans, Africans, Irish and Germans have all had influence in creating such a wonderfully interesting fun diverse city. There is a strong Catholic influence as well. New Orleans is often called the most unique city in the U.S.A.
Nicknames
New Orleans has more nicknames than any other U.S. city, a few of the more popular ones are, The Birthplace of Jazz, NOLA, The Crescent City and Mardi Gras City.

“Po-Boy/Poor Boy” is a sandwich made from French bread and “dressed” means you want lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mayo on it. F’sho/F’true means you are in agreement. “Make dodo” means go to sleep. “Cold drink” means soda or fizzy drink. “Bobo” means an ouchy. “Yeah you right!” is another expression of agreement or happiness.
