What Is a Parking Kiosk

A parking kiosk is a standalone, self-service payment terminal placed at or near a parking facility. Also called a parking pay machine or parking kiosk machine, these units handle the entire transaction — rate calculation, payment processing, receipt output, and session logging — automatically, without any staff involvement. Drivers approach the unit, enter identifying information (license plate, ticket number, or space number), review the amount owed, and pay.

Unlike an attendant-staffed booth, a parking kiosk operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without labor costs. Unlike a full gated barrier system, a kiosk does not require physical entry and exit equipment in every lane — it is a payment collection point, not a vehicle access controller. This makes it the most cost-effective starting point for operators who want to begin charging for parking without a large upfront infrastructure investment.

Kiosk vs. Pay Station: Terminology Note

The terms "parking kiosk" and "parking pay station" are used interchangeably in the industry. Technically, a pay station can refer to either a standalone kiosk-style unit or a drive-up unit integrated directly into a gated exit lane. Credit and Debit Cards

All kiosk models include an EMV chip card reader that accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. Interac debit is supported for Canadian facilities. The card reader is heated in cold-climate models to prevent freezing in winter conditions.

Contactless Tap and Mobile Wallets

NFC contactless readers accept tap payment from physical credit and debit cards and from Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay on any smartphone or smartwatch. Tap transactions complete in under 5 seconds — the fastest method available at the kiosk and increasingly the default for younger drivers.

Cash with Change

Cash-accepting kiosk models include a bill validator and coin acceptor with full change dispensed. Cash models serve facilities where a meaningful portion of users — event parking attendees, visitors to public facilities, or any location without a predominantly card-using customer base — prefer or require a cash payment option.

Mobile App and QR Code Payment

Parking BOXX supports QR code-based payment as a supplement or alternative to physical kiosk hardware. A QR code posted at the lot entrance links drivers to a mobile payment flow — no app download required for most implementations. License Plate Recognition (LPR)

LPR cameras added to the lot entrance capture each vehicle's plate on arrival. The driver's plate is linked to their parking session. When they pay — at the kiosk or via mobile — the system records payment against their plate. For gated facilities with LPR, the exit camera confirms payment and opens the barrier without a ticket. For monthly permit holders, LPR eliminates the need to interact with the kiosk at all.

Surface Parking Lots

The most common kiosk application is an open surface lot where a single kiosk or small cluster of units serves the entire facility. Drivers enter their license plate or space number, pay at the kiosk, and return to their vehicle. No gate infrastructure is required. Small Parking Garages

Garages under approximately 150 stalls often find that a full gated system is over-engineered and over-priced for their volume. A pay-on-foot kiosk inside the garage serves the same payment-collection function at a fraction of the infrastructure cost. When volume eventually justifies gates, the kiosk transitions to a supplemental pay-on-foot station and CloudEASE carries all existing configuration and data into the gated setup.

Retail and Mixed-Use Properties

Shopping centers, mixed-use developments, and retail plazas often need parking payment collection without restricting access — customers should be able to enter and exit freely.
