History
Detroit is in the Midwest area of the U.S.A. in the state of Michigan on the banks of the Detroit River. Fort Pontchartrain du Détroit was founded by French trader Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac in 1701. He named it Detroit in honor of his patron. The translation of the French phrase le détroit du Lac Érie means the strait of Lake Erie. The strait links Lake Erie and Lake Huron, including Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River. In 1760 the British took over rule in Detroit. The British later changed the name, dropped the Fort and called it Detroit. From June 1805 until January 1837, the Territory of Michigan was an incorporated territory. Detroit was the territorial capital. The Wolverine State – Michigan – joined the union in 1837. Home to numerous automobile manufacturers such as, Chalmers Motor Car Company, Checker Motor Car Company, Chevrolet Motor Car Company and Chrysler Corporation earned Detroit the nickname Motor City. Henry Ford established the use of the assembly line in the manufacturing of cars. Chrysler, G.M. and Ford are referred to as the “Big Three”. The Cadillac was named after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. He was also honored with a 3 cent stamp in 1951 in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of him founding Detroit. 1908 was the year the Ford Model T was first manufactured. The tunnel to Windsor opened in 1930. Detroit is the birth place of Motown and Motown records was started by Barry Gordy in 1959. Detroit’s infamous riot happened in 1967. The population has seen a decline in population recently; it is currently just under 700,000. Famous nicknames for Detroit are the Motor City, Hockeytown, Rock City and Motown.
