History
Atlanta is located where the Chattahoochee River and Peachtree Creek meet. Atlanta is in the state of Georgia in the southeastern part of the U.S.A. Prior to the arrival of the Europeans, the Cherokee and Creek Indians inhabited the area. The history of Atlanta dates back to 1837, founded as Terminus then in 1842 became Thrasherville and had a population of 30. Thrasherville became Marthasville and in 1845 became Atlantica-Pacifica which was shortened to Atlanta. The town was incorporated in 1847. Atlanta has been the capital of Georgia since 1868. Atlanta played a pivotal role in both the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960’s. The 1996 Olympics were held in Atlanta. Atlanta experiences annual temperatures of 70°F for a high and 52°F for a low making for an average temperature of 61°F. Atlanta is located in Fulton County. The population of Atlanta is just under 464,000 with the metropolitan area reaching 5.6 million. The Atlanta Metropolitan Area consists of Atlanta, Sandy Springs and Roswell. Atlanta is known for hosting the busiest airport in the world by volume, with over 101 million passengers. They have had this distinction since the year 2000.
