Originally there were 30 Native American tribes scattered across North Carolina. The first English colony was established in 1585 on Roanoke Island. N.C. was 1st settled in 1587 with 121 settlers. Giovanni de Varrazano was the 1st European to visit. In 1665, a second colony was permanently established on the Cape Fear River by Sir John Yeamans. The Settlers all disappeared and is still a mystery today. Hernando de Soto explored for gold. In 1705, Bath, the 1st town in N.C. was built. Charlotte Town was incorporated in 1768. Tyron Palace, 1st Capitol building, built in 1770. 1789 North Carolina became the 12th state. Charlotte was named after King George’s wife, Charlotte, Queen of England. Charlotte is located in the South Central part of North Carolina, on the east coast of the U.S.A. It is the biggest city in North Carolina.
