Chicago Origins
The name “Chicago” came from the word Shikaakwa (“Stinky Onion”). On August 12, 1833 the Town of Chicago incorporated. The State of Illinois gave Chicago a City Charter on March 4, 1837. Chicago is part of Cook County. The 1833 population of 350 people ballooned to over 4,000 people by 1840. The population today is just over 2 million. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 burned for 2 days and killed 300 people. There are various theories as to how the fire was started. One myth was Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicked over an oil lamp and ignited the straw in the barn. Others include meteorites or even another person. In 1956 the Chicago Fire Academy was built on the site of the burned down barn. A few common nicknames for Chicago are The Great Chicago Fire, Chi-Town and The Windy City. Come VisitChicago.
