History
The city of Duncan, located in the Southern tip of Vancouver Island, a part of the Eastern province of British Columbia, is the smallest city in all of Canada. Located in the traditional lands of the Cowichan people, Duncan is a place of cultural vibrancy hailing itself as the “City of Totems”. A walk around the core will reveal exactly why- starting in the 1980’s, the city has erected 80 totem poles. Before service was discontinued in 2011 along the Victoria-Courtenay line -Vancouver Island’s southern railway- the city of Duncan was a notable stop. Now an economic and cultural hub of the Cowichan Valley, the city is still accessible to those traversing the Trans-Canada Highway.
Sights and Sounds
Take a walk through the city to see the meticulously carved totems, or relax and play in one of the city’s many parks, like the breathtaking Bright Angel Park or dare to climb the summit of Mount Prevost. Explore the local artisan shops like ‘Imagine That! Artisans’ Designs Cooperative’ or the ‘Artisan’s Nest Collective’ for your next signature purchase. Take in the historic sights at the ‘B.C. Forest Discovery Centre’, a museum of British Columbia’s logging industry, grab a glass of wine at The Blue Grouse Estate Winery and Vineyard, or spend a weekend morning strolling through the Duncan Farmer’s Market which takes place every Saturday morning, all year round.
