History
El Paso is located in the west corner of the state of Texas in the southwest part of the United States. Pueblos, original inhabitants, lived in the southwest. Nomadic Indians such as the Mansos, Sumas, Janos, Piros, Tiguas, Tompiros, Tanos and Jemez also inhabited the area. The Spanish settled the area in 1682 and named it Ysleta. Juan María Ponce de León established the first permanent settlement in 1827. El Paso del Norte (the Pass of the North). It is situated on the banks of the Rio Grande opposite Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. The city is divided into two sections by the Franklin Mountains. One of the country’s largest military army complexes, Fort Bliss, is located in the east and northeast of the city and training areas stretching north into New Mexico. El Paso is a major entry point from Mexico. El Paso was once an important copper refining hub but now manufacturing is the main industry.
