History
Originally the Cherokee & Chickasaw Indians occupied the area now known as Huntsville, found in Madison County in northern Alabama in the southeast section of the U.S.A. John Hunt arrived in 1805 to Big Spring. The area became known as Twickenham. The name was eventually renamed Huntsville after John Hunt. Huntsville was incorporated in 1811 becoming the first registered town in Alabama. Huntsville was the capital of Alabama for 1 year, between the years 1819 – 1820. The economy grew thanks to the railroad and cotton industries. The population of Huntsville is just under 190,000. The metropolitan population which includes Huntsville, Decatur and Albertville is just over 441,000. Popular nicknames the city is known by are The Rocket City, H-Town and Huntsvegas. Numerous Fortune 500 Companies are found in Huntsville, General Electric, FedEx, Wells Fargo, UPS, Boeing, IBM, Delta Air Lines, AT&T, Target, Lockheed Martin, Verizon Communications and Cisco just to name a few. The City has a high tech workforce with Aerospace & Defense and Technology being the major industry. It houses NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command, the center of rocket propulsion research in the country. Huntsville has an annual low of 47°F and an annual high of 65°F with 56°F being the overall average. Huntsville has been named the best affordable place to live in the U.S.A.
