History
Native Timucuan Indians first occupied the area now known as Jacksonville Florida. The first European settlement was established in 1562. In 1564 the French explorers arrived. La Caroline was meant to be a refuge for the Protestants. The Spanish destroyed it. Then the British came and took over. The English built a road between Georgia and St. Augustine and called the area Cow Ford. Cow Ford changed its name to Jacksonville in 1822. Jacksonville was named after President Andrew Jackson. He never travelled to his namesake. The City of Jacksonville was incorporated in 1832. The city was occupied four times During the Civil War (1861–1865) resulting in much of Jacksonville being destroyed.
