The City of Los Angeles is the 2nd largest City in the United States. The population of the Greater Los Angeles area is just over 18.5million. Its original name is El Pueblo Sobre el Rio de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles del Ríode Porciuncula. English translation means The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels on the River Porciuncula. People today call it Los Angeles, The City of Angels, or just LA, for short. For thousands of years, the area was inhabited by the Indigenous peoples of Tongva and Chumash. The Spanish stopped by in 1542. The Spanish and Mexicans settled the area around 1769. California became a State in 1851. The City of Los Angeles was incorporated in 1850. California is so rich in history and legend. The Gold Rush, discovery of oil, the building of the transcontinental railroad (1876) are just a few of the interesting historical landmarks to be studied and explored. Earthquakes are an ever present danger in California. Southern California (SOCAL) finds itself situated over two major fault lines:The San Jacinto and San Andreas. Natives to California are bracing themselves for the “Big One”.
