Milwaukee is a city in the Midwest United States in the state of Wisconsin on Lake Michigan’s western shore. The original indigenous peoples of the area were Menominee, Ottawa, Chippewa and the Potawatomi. The Potawatomi are presently the largest group of indigenous natives in Milwaukee today. French fur traders arrived in 1674. There are 3 founding fathers claiming credit for arriving first to the area in 1818. Shortly thereafter, Byron Kilbourn settled on the west side of the Milwaukee River. Milwaukee was incorporated in 1846 with Solomon Juneau being elected as its first mayor. Milwaukee comes from the Algonquian word Millioke which means beautiful, good and pleasant land.
Milwaukee’s population is just under 595,000 and the Milwaukee–Racine–Waukesha Metropolitan Area claims a population of 2,043,904. Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin. The annual high temperature of Milwaukee is 56°F and the annual low is 40°F making the average temperature 48°F. Milwaukee is known for its many and varied Breweries and is known as the beer capital of the world. Original home to the Big 4 breweries, Blatz, Pabst, Schlitz and Miller.
