Panama is located on an isthmus bordering between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It is located in Central America, in between North and South America. Panama City was founded by the Spanish on August 15th 1519. The city was destroyed in 1671 by fire. It was rebuilt in 1673 at the present day location. Located on the outskirts of the city is Panama Viejo, ruins of the former city. Panama City is the capital of Panama and is located on the southern end of the Panama Canal. It took 56,000 workers to construct at a cost of $350 million. 5,600 people perished during construction, representing 10% of the work force. It affords passage across the Panama isthmus, a 50 mile stretch, between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The canal sees a daily number of 13,000 ships passing through. The journey takes between 8 – 10 hours. It requires 10,000 people to operate and maintain the canal. On December 31st, 1999 the oversight of the canal was transferred from the U.S.A. to Panama.
