History
Philadelphia was founded in 1682 by Quaker Wm. Penn. The original Philadelphia was named for a Pergamon King named Attalus II Philadelphus because of the love he had for his brother, Eumenes II. William Penn gave the city its name in hopes of promoting love and tolerance of beliefs. Pennsylvania was named in honor of Admiral Sir William Penn; Wm. Penn’s father. Pennsylvania received its charter in 1681 and Philadelphia in 1701. Philadelphia has a rich history and heritage in the founding of the U.S. The U.S. Marine Corps was established in 1775. The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, 1776 in Independence Hall. The Constitution was drafted, written and amended from 1787-1789. Between 1790 and 1800, Philadelphia served as the Capital of the States. The seat of Government was moved from New York to Philly then to Washington D.C. Baldwin Locomotive Works originated in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania Railroad was once the largest railroad in the U.S. Philadelphia was also a major hubbub for the production of hats, garments, lace, textiles and carpets. It has a large port which facilitates shipping for the North Eastern part of the U.S. and Canada. The port is only one of fourteen authorized to handle the U.S. military’s cargo being shipped to U.S. troops around the globe. Crayola, Heinz, Airwalk, Aramark, GNC and American Eagle are just a few of the Head offices found in Pennsylvania. Famous people originating from Pennsylvania are Kobe Bryant, Grace Kelly, Taylor Swift, Sharon Stone and Tina Fey. Although Philadelphia cream cheese originated in New York, it was named after Philadelphia, known for its top quality food. Today it is sold in over 80 countries. A few well known nicknames for Philadelphia are, Philly, The City of Neighborhoods, The birthplace of America, The City that loves you back and City of brotherly love. The population in 2016 is estimated at 1.5 million.
