Sacramento is located in Central Valley, in the State of California in the west part of the United States of America. Original Indigenous people to the area were the Nisenan and Maidu tribes. John Sutter arrived in 1839. Named for the Sacramento River which was named for the Santisimo Sacramento (Most Holy Sacrament) in reference to the Holy Eucharist by Gabriel Moraga. The area was incorporated in 1850. It has been the capital of California since 1879. The population of California (39 million) is more than the entire Country of Canada. The population of Sacramento is just over 490,000. The Sacramento metropolitan area consists of 7 counties; El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, Sutter, Yoloand Yuba with a population just fewer than 2,250,000. The 1960 Winter Olympics were held at Squaw Valley hosting 30 countriesand 27 events and saw 665 athletes participate!
