History
Salt Lake City is located in Salt Lake County, in the State of Utah in the Western part of the U.S.A. It is the capital of Utah. Original inhabitants of the area included the Shoshone, Ute and Paiute people. Salt Lake City was founded in the Northeastern Shoshone territory in 1847 by Mormon followers, including Brigham Young. The original name was Great Salt Lake City after the Great Salt Lake but in 1868, the Great was removed. The lake is landlocked thus resulting in a buildup and high concentration of salt and minerals. It is the largest lake between the Pacific Ocean and the Great Lakes. It is approximately 35 miles wide and 75 miles long. It is a relatively shallow lake with a maximum depth of 33 feet and the average depth being 13 feet. Table salt and other minerals are extracted from the lake by manufacturing companies. The first permanent settlers in the area were The Latter-day Saints. Construction of The Salt Lake Temple took 40 years to complete. Ski City is comprised of 4 ski resorts. With an annual dry snow fall of 500 inches, this is the place to come for world class skiing and entertainment. If golf is what you are after, there are numerous scenic courses, Salt Lake City Golf. The annual low temperature is 46°F and high of 63°F making for an average overall temperature of 55°F. Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area is comprised of two counties: Tooele and Salt Lake. The metropolitan area is part of the Salt Lake City-Provo-Orem, UT Combined Statistical Area, which includes the Ogden–Clearfield metro area, the Provo–Orem metro area, the Heber City, Utah micropolitan area, and the Summit Park, Utah micropolitan area and has a combined population of just over 2,500,000. While city proper has a population estimated at 192,000. Salt Lake City International Airport is located 4 miles west of the downtown area and is both a civil and military airport. The 2002 Winter Olympics were held in Salt Lake City hosting 77 countries in 78 events.
