San Jose is located on the northwest coast of California. The area of San Jose was originally occupied by the Ohlone Indians. The Spanish settled in the area in 1777 and built the Mission Santa Clara. This building is now housed on the University of Santa Clara grounds. The Mission San Jose was built in 1797. There were 68 people in 1778. California’s first capital was San Jose. The capital was eventually moved to Monterey. San Jose was deeply affected by the earthquake of 1906. Although many people moved west to pan for gold, that did not work out so well. They ended up growing fruits in the Valley. Today that Valley is nicknamed Silicon Valley for the southern area of the San Francisco Bay Area based on the fact that there is such a high powerful economy based on technology. San Jose is its capitol. Silicon Valley is chock-a-block with large well-known companies such as Lockheed Martin, AMD(Advanced Micro Devices), Apple, Hp(Hewlett Packard), EA(Electronic Arts), Cisco, Google, Agilent, LSI Logic, NVIDIA, NETFLIX, Facebook, ORACLE, TESLA Motors, Symantec. The population of San Jose is just over 1,000,000. The average temperature generally does not go below 40°F or above 90°F.
