The Denny Family arrived on the shores of Alki Beach in 1851 travelling from Portland, Oregon. In 1852 they moved from Alki Beach to Elliott Bay. Seattle officially became a town in 1853. Originally called Dewamps or Duwamps, the City was later named after the Indigenous leader of the Squamish & Duwanish people, Chief Seattle. Seattle is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Today the population of the Seattle area (comprising of Seattle, Bellevue & Tacoma) is approximately 3.75 million.
