History

The Denny Family arrived on the shores of Alki Beach in 1851 travelling from Portland, Oregon. In 1852 they moved from Alki Beach to Elliott Bay. Seattle officially became a town in 1853. Originally called Dewamps or Duwamps, the City was later named after the Indigenous leader of the Squamish & Duwanish people, Chief Seattle. Seattle is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Today the population of the Seattle area (comprising of Seattle, Bellevue & Tacoma) is approximately 3.75 million. The average temperature is 52°F. Rain and mild temperatures guarantee moderate weather. Many successful companies have established their head offices in Seattle. Emerald City, The Jet City, The Rainy City and The Gateway to Alaska are just a few nicknames given to Seattle. Some fun facts about Seattle, the smiley face was created by a Seattle Ad agency in 1966 – Space Needle is 605ft tall – more people bike to work than in any other State.
