Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach is a coastal city in Virginia, and although it is larger, it is considered the suburb of Northfolk.  Norfolk is a central business district whereas Virginia Beach is the center for tourism.  Virginia Beach is the longest beach for pleasure in the world according to the Guinness Book of World Records.  There are seven boroughs of Virginia Beach: Bayside, Blackwater, Kempsville, Lynnhaven, Princess Ann, Pungo, and Virginia Beach.  The area has a humid subtropical climate.  It has mild winters with light precipitation and hot humid summers.  Transportation by car is typically the best way to get around Virginia Beach.

Sights

Virginia Beach Boardwalk and Beachfront is the main attraction in the City of Virginia Beach in the summer time as well as in the winter time.  In the winter there are lots of fun things to do.  Go on an expedition to see the humpback whales, dolphins or oyster farms, go horseback riding on the beach, or go fishing in the striped bass capital of the world.  In the summer be sure to head out in the water.  If you are heading to the beach be sure to plan ahead to find the best parking.  There are multiple city-owned parking options just steps away from the beach.  There are municipal parking lots on Atlantic Avenue at Rudee Loop and 4th Street, on Pacific Avenue at 19th and 25th streets and at Croatan Beach.

Come see the Virginia Aquarium where there are over 800 000 gallons of fresh water and salt water displays.  The recent renovations include four different habitats: Malaysian Peat Swamp, Coastal Sahara Desert, Red Sea and Indonesia Flores Island.  There are over 12 000 animals consisting of over 700 species. Take some time and check them all out.  As well, take a look at the website to find about the special events happening at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Centre.  For adventurers, come to Adventure Park which is a part of the Virginia Aquarium.  Take to the trees and explore the treetop trails, no climbing experience required.  While the beach is beautiful, alternatively you can go to Ocean Breeze Water Park for some family fun.  With thirteen exciting slides and an enormous wave pool there are plenty of options to relax and have fun.

One of the most popular parks in Virginia Beach is Mount Trashmore Park.  It is fittingly called so since the park is located on top of a landfill.  The park is open seven days a week from 7:30 am until sunset. The park has picnic shelters, volleyball areas, parking, vending machines, lake’s for fishing, several hiking trails and restrooms.

The Military Aviation Museum was ranked 5 out of 5 on trip advisor.  It has one of the largest collections of war birds from WWI and WWII. History comes alive when you see The 65 vintage airplanes on display.  There are German, French, Italian, Russian, British, and American planes.

Back Bay Wildlife Rescue is a freshwater refuge on the Currituck Banks Peninsula.  Go hiking or take the trail to access False Cape State Park.  It features Maritime Forests, sand dunes, freshwater marshes, an ocean beach and wintering wildfowl.

Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art got 4.5 stars out of a possible 5 on trip advisor.  At the museum you can participate in tours, classes, lectures, films and community outreach.  Children, teens and adults can discover drawing, paintings, ceramics, digital photography and more. MOCA defines contemporary art as a reflection of the culture in which we live.  Most works of art at MOCA were created by living artists.

Sports

Every year Virginia Beach hosts the East Coast Surfing Championships which is the oldest surfing contest in North America.  A hundred professional surfers compete as well as four hundred amateur surfers.  The beach also hosts the North American Sand Soccer Championship, the annual beach soccer tournament.  For golf aficionados there are eleven different golf courses to choose.  There is enough variety to shake things up and never get bored.
