History
Washington D.C. was founded in 1790 and by the Constitution of the U.S.A. was established as the Nation’s capital. The area was originally inhabited by Algonquian Natives known as Nacotchtank. The area known today as the District of Columbia (D.C.) was chosen by President George Washington. Both Maryland and Virginia gave up land to the Federal Government to create the District of Columbia. On September 18th, 1793 President George Washington laid the foundation stone for the U.S. Capitol. In 1800, President John Adams and his wife Abigail were the First President and First Lady to live in the President’s House. The White House was burned in the war of 1812 and was rebuilt by 1819. Originally nicknamed The President’s House, President Roosevelt officially named it the White House in 1901, named for the reason that it was painted white. The White House address is 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Tours of the White House are free and scheduled through your congressional rep. White House Tour. Washington is a culturally eclectic city.
