History
In 1638, Sweden and Finland set up the first colony in Delaware. The Dutch took over in 1655, then the British. The 1st Borough charter was granted in 1739. The town was named after the Earl of Wilmington. A second charter was granted in 1832, incorporating Wilmington City. Wilmington is home to many Corporate Head Offices, companies such as DuPont, SallieMae, Gore-Tex, Incyte, EDiS, and AstraZeneca just to name a few. Wilmington is Delaware’s largest city. The population is just under 72,000. The Wilmington airport is located in New Castle. The average winter temperature is usually below 48*F and the average summer temperature usually above 80*F. Wilmington is home to the Blue Rocks, a Single-A affiliate of the Kansas City Royals, and the Delaware 87ers, a Philadelphia 76ers affiliate.
