Sarnia, Ontario (May 2, 2019) Parking BOXX, the North American-based parking system manufacturer and software developer, announced the recipient of the Parking Solutions Scholarship for Technical Innovation in Parking Solutions.
The scholarship was awarded to Mohamed Amadou for his Parking BOXX-integrated mobile application centred on maximizing parking space efficiency and enhancing the customer service experience. Based in Waterloo, Ontario, one of Canada’s most important technology hubs, Mr. Amadou is studying Computer Science and Business at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University respectively. As part of the award, he received a $1,000 scholarship from Parking BOXX
This marks the second year that Parking BOXX offered the international scholarship, open to all university-enrolled students worldwide. To apply, students write and submit a 500-word essay identifying a parking industry problem and outlining their technologically-innovative solution.
The scholarship program began last year as an effort to foster creativity and problem-solving within the student population. As the need for technological solutions continues to rise in the parking industry, it is part of Parking BOXX’s mission to support an emerging class of technology-oriented professionals.
This year, over 300 applications were received. Students proposed a variety of solutions: from centralized payment systems, to artificial intelligence, green parking initiatives, and innovative spatial arrangements. Like the previous year, the most popular theme was the use of mobile applications: apps to pre-book spaces, apps to pay online, and space-sharing apps.
Mr. Amadou’s app-centred essay won the award for its thorough identification of parking inefficiencies, and its pragmatic, cost-effective approach. “To come up with my idea,” Mr. Amadou said, “I just thought about what would reduce friction for me in going out and what would likely create value for other people that belong to my consumer demographic.”
“The ubiquity of smart-phones and the convenience of mobile applications has led us to expect a lot of app-based solutions from our entrants,” said Renee Smith, Parking BOXX’s CTO. “Students thought critically and creatively about innovative solutions but Mohamed Amadou’s stood out for its practicality and feasibility.”
“I’ve always been entrepreneurially-minded,” Mr. Amadou added, “And my biggest goal is to disrupt the high-tech industry and run a leading firm within the industry.”
Parking BOXX would like to thank all of this year’s applicants for their creative and innovative solutions. We were pleased by the overwhelming global response and the Parking Solutions Scholarship is now open for 2019!
